Skill Level: Late Beginner → Early Intermediate:
A guitarist who can comfortably play all of these chords is generally around:Upper Beginner / Lower Intermediate
- The list includes standard open chords
- Basic 7th chords
- Slash chords (alternate bass notes):
- Color chords (maj7, add9)
- One possible barre chord (B) which tends to be the dividing line between "beginner" and "intermediate"
Some of these chords may feel unfamiliar at first, especially to beginners, but each shape is achievable with a little practice. Working through them gradually will not only strengthen your technique but also expand your overall chord vocabulary, giving you more options to use in your playing.
An open Bb shape is included in the charts. This voicing is an inversion of the standard Bb barre chord, and while it’s not the textbook form, it sounds fine in most contexts. More importantly, it provides a much easier alternative for beginners who may struggle with full barre chords, allowing them to play songs confidently while building strength and technique for the standard shape later on.
D/F# and Dadd9 are perhaps the most difficult to play as they require a bit of a stretch, with Dadd9 requiring a small barre, but very easy once you get used to it. If you find these difficult to play, just continue playing a D chord.
The Em – Em/D – Em/C# run is straightforward once you get used to it.- Em/D requires no new finger placement — you simply play the top four strings, with the D bass note naturally leading on the 4th string.
- Em/C# only needs a small re‑arrangement using two fingers, making it easy to transition smoothly from Em/D.
